Australia’s first
In 2011, SITA-MediCollect became the first company in Australia licenced to recover single-use medical devices.

Healthcare for the Environment

Healthcare for the Environment is a joint initiative between SITA-MediCollect and Johnson and Johnson Medical to improve environmental sustainability practices within the healthcare sector.

This resource recovery initiative is the first of its kind in Australia.

By working together, SITA-MediCollect and Johnson and Johnson Medical are working to reduce the millions of medical devices that are currently incinerated and sent to landfill from hospitals all across Australia.

Through Healthcare for the Environment, single use medical devices made of medical grade plastic and metal (steel, titanium and aluminium) are collected and treated to recover metal and plastic components.

Healthcare for the Environment offers a new, more sustainable approach to handling single-use medical devices once they are used in hospitals.

How the Initiative Works

Participating hospitals receive a bin clearly labelled Healthcare for the Environment that is placed near the operating theatre for the collection of single use medical devices.

All medical devices made of medical grade plastic and metal - regardless of whether or not they have been manufactured by Johnson and Johnson Medical - may be placed in the Healthcare for the Environment bin for collection.

SITA-MediCollect will collect the bins to treat and recover metal and plastic resources. The valuable resources collected from the devices will be processed and used in the manufacture of new products.

All other clinical waste from operating theatres must continue to be collected and disposed of according to existing hospital protocols and regulations by relevant authorities.
